(Strange Songs) In the Dark

Merchandise’s debut LP, (Strange Songs)In The Dark, was a decisive step away from the band’s initial post-punk EPs, diving instead into experimental, studio-based pop. Recorded by Carson Cox and David Vassalotti in early 2010, the lo-fi album is rich with hooks (such as “I Locked the Door” and “Worthless Apology”) despite its hazy nature. This ambitious record, though often abstract, showcases creative reinvention and foreshadows the band's sophisticated sound, eventually leading to their 4AD signing. Fans of their later work will appreciate this foundational early effort.
