Gypsum Strings

Brooklyn's Oakley Hall built a sound out of old American ballads and the volume of a rock band: Rachel Cox and Patrick Sullivan's twin vocals, Claudia Mogel's amplified fiddle, and Fred Wallace's electric guitar tuned like a five-string banjo, all driven by a backbeat.

Gypsum Strings, released on Oneida's Brah Records in 2006, is louder and stranger than the band's earlier records. Guitars and fiddle trade leads on burners like "Confidence Man" and "Lazy Susan," while the ballads give the record its weight.
