BIOGRAPHY
Phosphorescent is the musical project of American singer-songwriter Matthew Houck, known for his deeply emotional, genre-blurring music that combines elements of indie rock, folk, country, and Americana. Houck’s work under the Phosphorescent moniker is characterized by its heartfelt lyricism, warm, often lush arrangements, and a distinctive voice that conveys a sense of weary wisdom and vulnerability.

Phosphorescent began in 2001, when Houck, originally from Alabama, started recording music under this name. Early releases, like A Hundred Times or More (2003) and Aw Come Aw Wry (2005), showcased his ability to craft songs that felt both intimate and expansive, with a lo-fi, rustic charm that drew comparisons to artists like Will Oldham and Iron & Wine.

Houck's breakthrough came with the 2007 album Pride, a haunting, atmospheric record that introduced a broader audience to his unique sound. The album’s sparse arrangements, layered harmonies, and meditative tone set the stage for Phosphorescent’s evolution into a more fully realized and sonically rich project.
