Destroyer

BIOGRAPHY

Destroyer are a Canadian indie rock band formed in 1995 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and led by singer-songwriter Dan Bejar. Over the years, the band has become known for its ever-evolving sound, which blends elements of indie rock, art rock, glam, jazz, and even orchestral pop. Bejar's distinctive voice, cryptic lyrics, and eclectic musical influences have made Destroyer a unique and influential presence in the indie music scene.

Destroyer began as a solo project for Bejar, who initially recorded lo-fi albums on a four-track recorder. As the project gained momentum, it evolved into a full band, though Bejar remains the sole constant member. The band's breakthrough came with the 2001 album Streethawk: A Seduction, which showcased Bejar's penchant for literary lyrics and lush arrangements.

One of Destroyer's most acclaimed albums is Kaputt (2011), which marked a stylistic shift towards smooth, jazz-inflected pop, drawing comparisons to the sounds of the 1980s. The album received widespread critical praise and brought the band a larger audience. Other notable albums include Poison Season (2015) and Have We Met (2020), each of which reflects Bejar's continuous exploration of new sonic territories.
